Vehicles under 3.5 t
Vignette obligation in Slovakia applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t, two-track motor vehicles, M1 category vehicles with the permissible weight, and a combination of the vehicles. An additional motorway vignette is required for a trailer if the total weight of the vehicle of the M1 or N1 category exceeds 3.5 t.
About the Slovakia vignette online
A Slovak digital vignette is used in the electronic system of vignette payment collection and records for using toll roads in Slovakia. An electronic motorway vignette replaced a standard vignette in the form of a sticker, and now drivers do not have to stick a physical vignette to the vehicle’s windscreen.
The obligation to get a vignette before using the motorways and expressways in the Slovak Republic generally applies to motor vehicles with a total permissible weight of up to 3.5 t. Vehicles weighing more than 3.5 t must get an on-board unit that checks the distance and specifies fees.
Slovakia e-vignette can be purchased online, at the majority of petrol stations, or through self-serve devices located at border crossings.
Most drivers prefer online purchase, as it is the most straightforward method to get a vignette for Slovakia. The applicant should fill out a registration form providing the requested details (vehicle’s registration number, country of registration, contact info, etc.) and cover the fees. The confirmed e-vignette will be sent to the email address specified in the form.
The digital vignette for Slovakia is available in several types: for 1 calendar year, 365 days, 30 days, or 10 days. Drivers can select the preferred type of Slovakia e-vignette in the application form.
Note that there are vignette exemptions to some categories of vehicles, for example, governmental vehicles or vehicles used for social services.

Why are vignettes mandatory in Slovakia?
A digital vignette is obligatory for vehicles under 3.5 t entering highways and certain roads in Slovakia as a way to contribute to the maintenance and development of the country’s road infrastructure. Motorway vignette serves as a form of road toll and helps fund the upkeep and improvement of the roads, ensuring they remain in good condition for drivers. Well-maintained roads result in reducing car accidents, which are one of the leading causes of deaths from unintentional injuries.

Penalties
Before using a toll road in Slovakia, a driver needs to purchase an electronic vignette. The obligation applies to every vehicle up to 3.5 t. The control is conducted via a camera system deployed throughout the whole infrastructure and directly in the field by special mobile patrols. If it is discovered that a vehicle does not have a valid vignette for Slovakia, the driver of the vehicle will be subject to a fine from 100 EUR to 500 EUR.
