About Hungarian vignette online

A Hungarian vignette online is required on toll roads in Hungary. Currently, thanks to the introduction of electronic vignette, there is no need to stop at the toll station, as everything can be done online from the comfort of the home. Besides, no physical toll sticker is required. It is a very convenient option for travelers who wish to drive through Hungarian motorways.

Getting a digital vignette that allows use of the Hungarian toll roads is straightforward. Drivers of motor vehicles with a permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tons (including passenger cars) need to take part in the intuitive process. Firstly, they should provide the necessary information in the form (such as vehicle category or license plate number). Secondly, they need to cover the service fee and receive approval. A digital vignette will be sent to the email in PDF form. Download it or print it out in case of random control.

The validity period of a vignette is as follows: one week, month, or year. An annual vignette comes in two subtypes: national and regional. You can select the type and validity period during the application process. Remember to check the provided information twice to avoid mistakes that can result in driving without a vignette.

What is more, vehicles heavier than 3.5 tons must have an onboard unit with GPS. The device is necessary as it measures the driven distance. In other cases, a vignette obligation applies. Without a vignette, drivers will be punished by a financial fine. The newest technologies, such as camera systems and drones, allow proper authorities to detect if your vehicle has a valid vignette.

How to buy a Hungarian vignette

It is very easy to take part in the visa application process for a vignette. You just need to consider the following steps:

  1. Provide vehicle data in the form. Check the details twice, as the license plate number mistakes will result in driving without a vignette.
  2. Pay the service fee. You can pick one of the available methods of payment, such as PayPal or credit/debit card.
  3. Wait for the confirmation and receive your eVisa via email. Remember to download a valid vignette or print it out, as it will be needed during control.

During the process, you can select the validity period of a vignette. There are three types available: vignette for a week, month, or year. You can pick one that suits your needs.

Why are vignettes mandatory in Hungary

Vignettes serve as a tax. Many countries in Europe demand a vignette on specific road sections (for instance, Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, or Hungary). The whole procedure is necessary as it enables the maintenance of roads from the raised funds.

All drivers of vehicles weighing less than 3.5 tons (including passenger cars) are required to buy a vignette to legally use the toll roads in Hungary. Thanks to this, ways in the country are well-kept. Besides, vehicles with a total weight heavier than 3.5 tons must have a special onboard unit with GPS measuring their distance.

Exceptions to the mandatory vignette usage in Hungary

In Hungary, there are toll-free sections of the motorways and expressways where a vignette is not necessary:

  • M31
  • M8
  • Pécs Southwest Bypass from M60 highway between routes 58 and 5826
  • M9 between main road 51 and 6
  • M4 between Vecsés and the Budapest Liszt Ferenc Airport road
  • Sections of the M0 (between main road 1 and motorway M5, motorway M4 and motorway M3, and Megyeri Bridge).

On the sections listed above, you don’t need to have a vignette. However, note that other parts of motorways in Hungary require a vignette. Check everything before and prepare for your trip accordingly.

Penalties

Drivers of vehicles up to 3.5 tons without a digital vignette on the Hungarian toll roads will be punished. The fine depends on the vehicle type. Vehicles of D1/D2 categories will be forced to pay 16 220 Ft within 60 days (after that period, the fine increases to 64 850 Ft).

In the case of B2 vehicles, a fine is 72 950 Ft (or 291 770 Ft after an increase if you won’t pay within the deadline). Towing vehicles (D2/B2 categories) or combinations of vehicles with trailers (U category) are required to cover the single fine. The date of receiving the fine notice letter is also the time when the deadline starts.

The NTPS PLC collects the fines through the Hungarian toll road network system and with the help of foreign agencies. Some countries don’t allow direct access to registries, so the identification will be done directly or indirectly.
