Important: Identifying roads where a vignette is required isn’t a difficult task. White and green road signs mean that these roads require obtaining a Czech digital vignette.

How to identify toll roads and free zones
The signage on Czech roads is consistent and easy to spot if you are paying attention.
- Pay Attention: Look for the green sign with a white motorway symbol. This generally indicates you are entering a paid zone.
- Vignette Required: You may see a sign with the text “Dálniční známka” or a hexagon symbol.
- Drive Freely: If you see a sign saying “Bez poplatku” (often accompanied by a crossed-out hexagon symbol) under the highway sign, that specific section is free to use.
Common tourist routes
It is important to note that the obligation to pay begins the moment you enter the motorway. Enforcement cameras regularly perform automatic license plate checks.
Here are common scenarios:
- Germany → Prague: If you enter via the D5, a vignette is required immediately.
- Austria → Prague: Driving from Vienna through Brno (D52 + D1) requires a vignette.
- Poland → Hradec Králové: The D11 route requires a vignette.
- Prague Airport → City Centre: Good news—this specific route generally does not require a vignette, as it avoids the major toll sections of the ring road.
