Vignette inspection in Slovakia

The Slovak vignette control is performed by the authorities via a camera system and drones. The registration plate number of the vehicle can be checked remotely at any time.

All vehicles with a maximum permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tons must have a purchased motorway vignette to enter Slovakia toll roads. In 2016, the Slovak government introduced an e-vignette (electronic vignette) that substituted a standard vignette in the form of a sticker.

Now, a digital vignette is available at most border crossings and petrol stations and by online purchase. The best way, in terms of convenience, is to get an online vignette.

The ordering process takes a few minutes only. A customer must complete a registration form, cover the fees, and check the inbox. Slovakia e-vignette will be delivered directly to the customer’s email address.

The Slovak vignette is available in different options of validity: 10 days, 30 days, 365 days, and 1 year. Choose the best type according to your travel plans, as it should remain effective for the entire duration of your stay in Slovakia.

Fines and penalties

Drivers of vehicles up to 3.5 tons using the roads of the Slovak toll system without a valid vignette risk being fined from 100 EUR to 500 EUR. It is necessary to purchase a vignette before entering Slovak highways and motorways. The vignette must be digitally connected to the correct plate number and be of the proper vehicle category. Always check the validity of your vignette. If your vignette expires, you will be subject to penalties as well.

Vehicles whose maximum permissible weight exceeds 3.5 tons do not need an e-vignette for Slovakia. However, since 2010, drivers of such vehicles must install a special toll box measuring the distance traveled. The final toll will depend on the vehicle and the driving distance.

Vignette exemption

Certain categories of vehicles are exempted from Slovakia e-vignette obligation:

  • the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic, including the budgetary organizations designated by the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic and the Police Force
  • the Slovak Republic’s Ministry of Defense, as well as entities under its control
  • NATO and the Slovak Republic’s Armed Forces
  • the armed forces or civil units of the sending country for executing official assignments
  • the Slovak Red Cross, local police, fire departments, and basic rescue units of the integrated rescue system
  • the administrators of state-owned motorways and roads, except those under concession
  • the Prison and Court Guard
  • historic vehicles subject to a special regulation

Operators of specific groups of vehicles or vehicle combinations are exempt from paying vignette toll only if their vehicles or vehicle combinations are registered in the Vignette Payment Collection Administrator’s system.

The operator of a vehicle/vehicle combination exempt from vignette payment must also provide relevant documents certifying the reasons for exemption.
